The weekend that was and my extreme dislike of the South African economy

I had such an amazing weekend.

Friday I spent time with a friend (colleague?) that lives in central cape town. Had a pretty cool evening with good food and great conversation. He had a friend of his visiting (what a stunner) but in typical female fashion she decided to leave early, after we cooked for her. Women. :)

Saturday morning was rock climbing, my arms are still sore. It was very cool. My friend Marko is a total legend on the rock wall. Climbs like a monkey :P
And Kevin (one of my fellow software engineers) came with. What a soldier, he actually conquered quite a few fears on the wall :)

Straight from rock climbing I went shopping, and cooked for my sister and a few friends. Lunch was so fun. Great food (if i do say so myself :P) and stunning company. They made me play the gee-tar. After rock climbing. Not easy.

All in all..fun :)


On a different note...
I have been thinking recently that I need to get out of debt. I'm young. I should be enjoying life, not endlessly stressing about bond repayments and the rising price of fuel.
So I checked with my bank yesterday regarding what is owing on my apartment. And what the penalty would be for settling the bond early..
I've owned this apartment for a year now and invested something in the region of R60 000 into the renovation of it.
There is a saying that goes 'as safe as houses'. I am beginning to realize that in the current climate of the South African economy the saying doesn't quite work anymore...unless you're a rich businessman buying for cash.

Basically the interest hikes and the subsequent fall in the property market have made it impossible for young people to own homes. I'm 25, and for my age I'm earning a very good salary. And yet I find I want to sell so as to get my head back above water.

Heres the kicker. If I sell now, I'll make a loss. The market has slumped, so the amount buyers would be willing to pay for my apartment will be just over the current bond value. After paying the real-estate agents commission I will be in exactly the same financial state I am in now. Perhaps with slightly more disposable income, but minus one Huge asset.

So all in all if you aren't immensely rich, the current legislation, meant to curb over-spending and promote a more cash driven society, will mean that you cannot own a home, and will be bled dry if you do.

This is Africa.

The flat...

Im thinking of selling.

Lack of sleep,coffee, apathy and web-design

I seem to be craving sleep alot lately. This weekend i went home for a nap...and ended up sleeping for 9 hours. 9!

So coffee is the order of the day.

On other news I seem to have gotten over The girl next door. I saw her on Sunday, and there was nothing..not even the slight butterflies that had become normal when speaking to her. There was just this cold calculated thought about the fact that she would be a fun night, and that she had an amazing body. I think collateral damage is sometimes a good thing.

And I have started designing web sites. I hope this will become a career opportunity. I think its ok to work for a company but the real financial independance comes with your own business. We shall see where it takes me.
